Beth Wood will challenge her former boss, Republican incumbent Les Merritt, in the general election for state auditor.
Wood easily topped Fred Aikens for the Democratic nod for state auditor, according to unofficial results. With 91 percent of precincts reporting, Wood had 64 percent of the vote, while Aikens had 36 percent.
The Democratic primary was between two veteran number crunchers who make Raleigh home. Aikens, 57, is a former senior fiscal analyst for the legislature and served as a deputy secretary in two state agencies. Wood, 54, a certified public accountant, had spent 10 years in the state auditor's office.
Wood had the endorsement of former State Auditor Ralph Campbell. She had worked for Campbell and Merritt. She resigned in August to challenge Merritt.
Wood and Aikens had struggled to raise money for the campaign. Wood raised $33,000, and Aikens had raised just under $30,000.
