DURHAM -- State Sen. Floyd B. McKissick Jr. cruised to an easy win in the Democratic primary in Senate District 20 Tuesday.
In a heavily Democratic Durham County district, he will be a strong favorite in November against Republican Kenneth R. Chandler, who faced no primary challenge.
McKissick defeated Ryan Echoles, a newcomer to politics who stopped campaigning earlier in the spring after failing to win the support of any of Durham's influential political organizations.
McKissick, a lawyer who was a Durham City Council member from 1993 to 2001, was appointed to the Senate seat last year after the death of Sen. Jeanne Lucas.
Chandler, his November opponent, moved to Durham from Halifax County last year. He ran unsuccessfully for a Senate seat in northeastern North Carolina in 2006.
