ASHEBORO -- The North Carolina Zoo will be closed this weekend, typically one of its busiest, due to a water line break.

A 12-inch pipe that provides water to the zoo's African exhibit area ruptured on Thursday. Zoo officials originally planned to use portable toilets in the exhibit area this weekend but they realized Friday that water to the rest of the zoo would have to be shut off to make repairs.

The broken line prevents the park from operating water fountains, restrooms and providing food and other services. Animals are being given water from ponds and other temporary sources, the zoo said.
