APEX — A worker at the U.S. Postal Service in Apex has resigned after more than 100,000 pieces of undelivered mail were discovered at the employee's home, according to authorities.

Evidence has been submitted to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Raleigh, which intends to prosecute the case, said Dan Mihalko, a spokesman for the Postal Service's Office of the Inspector General.

The name of the employee, who lives in Raleigh, has not been released.

Special agents from the Inspector General's Office searched the employee's home last week and found the undelivered mail, some of which is five or six years old, Mihalko said.

First-class mail will be delivered to the intended addresses after consultation with the U.S. Attorney's Office. Some of the undelivered mail consists of fliers and coupons.

Postal inspectors were tipped off last Tuesday by a meter reader who became suspicious after discovering a lot of undelivered mail on the back deck of the employee's residence, Mihalko said.

"This type of activity is really a rarity with postal employees," Mihalko said.
