Riding the bus has become a significantly more popular option for Triangle commuters.

Ridership in April rose by double digits, percentage-wise, for all but one of the area’s local and regional transit services, according to GoTriangle, which coordinates Triangle transit services.

The high cost of gasoline has been a driving force in the growing bus ridership numbers, said Brian Fahey, manager of the GoTriangle Transit Information Center.

Fahey anticipates that May ridership numbers either will match or exceed the 1.7 million riders recorded across the Triangle in April.

Chapel Hill Transit led all local transit services with a 30 percent increase in April ridership, compared to a year earlier.

The lowest increase was experienced by the Durham Area Transit Authority, whose 9.5 percent jump in riders fell just shy of a double-digit increase.

Ridership numbers for local transit services in April include: Chapel Hill Transit, 621,000, up 30 percent; Cary Transit, 6,963, up 25 percent; Triangle Transit, 83,926, up 20.5 percent; N.C. State Wolfline, 219,942, up 16.3 percent; Capital Area Transit, 377,826, up 14 percent; and Durham Area Transit Authority, 417,995, up 9.5 percent.

GoTriangle’s regional call center at 919-485-RIDE also received a record 24,699 phone calls inquiring about transit service in April. The call center opened in March 2007.
