CHAPEL HILL — A 20-year-old jogger has died at UNC Hospitals after she was struck by a Chapel Hill Transit bus on Manning Drive this morning, police said.

Police did not release the jogger's name, pending notification of relatives. An investigation of the accident is continuing.

The woman was jogging on Manning Drive and attempted to cross the road when she was struck, police said.

The accident happened southeast of the intersection of South Columbia Street. There was no crosswalk at the point of the impact, police said.

Witnesses said they saw the victim jogging on a sidewalk just before the collision. Police were continuing to investigate the accident and had not determined who was at fault.

It was the 12th pedestrian accident on Manning Drive in a little over three years. Three of those victims required hospital treatment.

In 2006, retired UNC psychology professor David Galinsky died while crossing U.S. 15-501 toward Manning Drive on his way to the Dean Smith Center for a Tar Heel basketball game.

In response, the town is planning to install new street lights, marked crosswalks and pedestrian signals, flashing signs, sidewalks and a pedestrian tunnel or bridge crossing U.S. 15-501 at Manning Drive over the next several years.
