HOLLY SPRINGS — Tests show that a fox suspected of scratching a homeowner in Sunset Lake Village earlier this weeks had rabies, according to Holly Springs police.

The police department is asking that anyone who might have been exposed to the rabid fox — such as a bite, scratch or contact with the animal’s saliva — call 557-9111 as quickly as possible.

It’s possible that more rabid foxes may be on the loose as well. The fox trapped by animal control officers may have given birth in recent weeks, according to police, and its pups could be infected as well.

The Sunset Lake Village homeowner who was scratched by a fox Tuesday morning while gardening began treatment for rabies prevention even before the test results showed the fox was rabid, according to town officials. The fox suspected of scratching the homeowner was trapped on Wednesday.

Police are advising homeowners not to set out food for wildlife, ensure that garbage can lids are secure and remove attractions such as pet food bowls that are kept outside.
