RALEIGH -- The Bible says to "make a joyful noise unto the Lord," and that's exactly what members of Benson Memorial United Methodist Church did.
But the noise was not joyful to the church's neighbors, one of whom called the police to complain. The outdoor "spirit day" celebration two Sundays ago included a bluegrass band and singing. It was cut short when a police officer arrived at 11:45 a.m. to investigate.
"It was a shock to us that anyone would complain," said Jerry Lee, a member of the church's community service committee, which planned the outdoor event as part of its confirmation service for children.
After the officer's visit, the band packed up its speakers. Lee said her committee will have to rethink the springtime service and perhaps do it differently next year.
