RALEIGH — Police charged a man today with impersonating a drug detective, court records show.
Not only did the man, Marcus Antonio Avery, impersonate an officer, police have also charged him with stealing from one of the victims.
Avery, 33, with an address listed on arrest warrants as “Anywhere Raleigh,” has been charged by police with one count each of impersonating a law enforcement officer, felony larceny from a person and felony obtaining property by false pretenses.
Investigators have accused Avery of representing himself as a drug officer to a woman on May 5 and then stealing her cell phone, police reported.
Police also have accused Avery of selling the cell phone to another woman, who called the police when she could not get the phone to work.
Avery is in custody at the Wake County jail in lieu of $21,000 bail, court records show.
