RALEIGH -- A slowing economy didn't prevent enrollment in North Carolina's private schools from reaching a record high this school year.

There were 97,656 students in private schools in the 2007-08 school year, up 2,871 children from the prior year, according to the N.C. Division of Non-Public Education. There was an overall gain of 3 percent in enrollment in kindergarten through 12th grade.

Locally, Wake County had the second-highest enrollment in the state at 14,696 students, up from 14,021 children the previous year. Mecklenburg County, which includes Charlotte, led the state with 19,502 students.

Public schools still account for more than 90 percent of the K-12 enrollment in the state with more than 1.4 million students.
