FAYETTEVILLE -- Several hundred people gathered at Snyder Memorial Baptist Church this morning to discuss how to handle an estimated 8,718 new military and civilian employees expected to move to the region as a result of base realignment.

The Community Regional Growth Plan presentation was hosted by the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission.

Community leaders were told they would need new schools and new roads. The population surge is the result of Fort Bragg gaining military personnel during the recent base realignment effort.

Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue gave the keynote address.

"Let me brag," said Perdue, the Democratic nominee for governor. "I believe -- I'm willing to go to my grave believing -- North Carolina had the biggest winner in America."

Perdue headed a state commission to save North Carolina's military bases.
