RALEIGH -- A former Sanderson High School teacher, charged with taking indecent liberties with a female student, pleaded guilty today to misdemeanor charges of attempted crime against nature and giving alcohol to an underage person.
Shannon Lynn Best received a 45-day suspended sentence and was put on 18 months of unsupervised probation. She was fined $250 and ordered not to be around the victim or any child under 18, according to court records.
Search warrants from April said Best and the 18-year-old student had been in a sexual relationship about four weeks. The warrants said Best and the student were photographed kissing during a sleepover at Best's house.
Although the student was of legal age, North Carolina law prohibits a sexual relationship between school personnel and students.
Wake County schools officials informed police of the relationship. Best admitted to Raleigh police investigators that she and the student had been sexually involved and that she had sent nude images of herself to the student. Best resigned from her job in April. She was hired in 2004.
