Merck for the second time in two years has expanded plans for a vaccine manufacturing plant in Durham.
The New Jersey company has agreed to invest an additional $300 million in the facility and create as many as 180 more jobs than earlier promised.
No state incentives were awarded for the expansion.
Merck in 2004 announced that it would build a $300 million plant in Durham’s Treyburn Corporate Park that would employ 150 to 175 workers. It received about $40 million in tax breaks and other government assistance.
In 2006, the pharmaceutical giant said it would invest about $100 million more than originally planned and add 50 to 60 more jobs.
With today’s announcement, Merck’s commitment totals about $700 million in investment and as many as 415 jobs.
