Chatham jail escapee sentenced

closePITTSBORO -- One of the men who escaped the Chatham County jail in February has been sentenced to almost nine years in prison for the crimes he committed during the escape.
Adrian Carlos Reyes pleaded guilty this week to two counts of kidnapping, one count of common law robbery and one count of escape.
The maximum sentence allowed on the misdemeanor escape charge is 45 days, but Judge Allen Baddour also sentenced him to 6 to 9 years for the two kidnapping charges.

Authorities say Reyes and four other men handcuffed two detention officers and stole their keys during the escape, accounting for the kidnapping and robbery charges.
Reyes still must face trial for his underlying charges: first-degree rape of a child, first-degree sexual offense with a child and six counts of taking indecent liberties with a child.
Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement has also filed a detainer to deport him after serving any criminal sentences.
Reyes is the second escapee to plead guilty.
In May, Kyle Kettrey was sentenced to 20 to 33 months for the same charges because he had no prior criminal record. Kettrey will be on probation after his release because of the breaking and entering and vandalism charges on which he was jailed.
The cases against Brian Blackwell, Stewart Baldwin and James Tarrer are still pending.
