RALEIGH -- A 31-year-old man died this morning when his Jeep went off the side of St. Mary's Street, struck a fire hydrant and light pole and overturned, Raleigh police said.

Jonathan Brite Brothers of 5752 Poolside Drive, Raleigh, was ejected from the 2004 Jeep and pronounced dead at the scene, according to a police report.

He was driving about 55 mph in a 35 mph zone when the accident occurred about 1 a.m. near the intersection of Lake Drive, according to the report. Brothers was not wearing a seatbelt.

The street remained closed in both directions from White Oak Road to Lake Drive this morning while city workers repaired the fire hydrant and damaged sidewalk.

The accident also damaged utility lines and knocked out power to some area customers. The utility lines have been repaired and power has been restored, said Progress Energy spokeswoman Charlene Hunt.
