RALEIGH -- The worsening economy has caused a North Raleigh private school to close its doors.

Parents at Raleigh Latin High School were notified this week that the school could not open for 2008-09 because fewer families than expected were planning to return. Parents were told that Trinity Academy in Raleigh and Hopewell Academy in Cary had agreed to accept the tuition contracts they had signed.

"They let us know as soon as possible," said Anna Cunningham, the school's co-PTA president. "I'm glad they were responsible enough to tell us so we could make plans."

The small Christian private school off Creedmoor and Sawmill roads offered classical education based on Latin, grammar, rhetoric and logic. Emphasis was placed on science and math.

Raleigh Latin opened in 2004 when some former St. Thomas More Academy parents decided to start their own school because of a difference in opinion on curriculum.

Cunningham said they had ended the recent school year fully expecting to return. But she said school officials told them that economic conditions forced a number of families to withdraw.
