An American flag whips and swirls in an early morning wind on Capital Boulevard. It's the flag's default display, but the symbol of America is malleable. It's apt to appear anywhere.
Just 30 miles away, Van Brubaker Jr. of Louisburg has one tattooed on his neck. Off Main Street in downtown Bunn, a plastic flag cell phone cover lies among others in a bin at the Lady-Bug discount store. It's on balloons, a soda bottle, hay bales, a bikini, a monster truck.
News & Observer staff photojournalist Juli Leonard went in search of the different ways the American flag is displayed in the Triangle. She spent two weeks shooting with a vintage Diana camera that creates a 6-inch-square negative.
The camera allows light leaks, creating a dark, irregular border for the frame and minimal focus in the center. Leonard photographed the project with this camera to give the images a timeless feel.
