Powerful thunderstorms postponed fireworks displays and led to major traffic back-ups in Raleigh, Cary and Chapel Hill on Friday night.

Fireworks shows at the N.C. State Fairgrounds in Raleigh and Regency Park in Cary were rescheduled for this evening. The fairgrounds show will start at 9:15 p.m.; the show in Cary will begin at 9 p.m. Durham's display at Durham Bulls Athletic Park was called off; no information about a make-up show was available at press time.

Friday night's thunderstorms rolled through the area between 8 and 9 p.m. Trisha Law attended the event in Cary, where the N.C. Symphony was performing. She said officials announced the postponement about 8:30 p.m.

More than an hour later, Law was still trying to leave Regency Park. She said no police officers were on the scene to direct traffic because the show ended early.

"It's nuts out here. We can't get out," she said.

The storms also downed trees and power lines in Chapel Hill and Raleigh. Scattered power outages were reported.
