Shots fired at Chatham County deputies

MONCURE -- When Chatham County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a disturbance at 739 Old US 1, Moncure on July 5, someone held a gun above a crowd and shot at the deputies.

According to a media release, deputies arrived to find about 60 people at the location. At least two individuals began fighting when deputies arrived, the release said.

As Deputy Phillip Richard tried to stop the fight, an individual held a gun above the crowd and shot in the direction of Deputy Richard, the release said.

The crowd fled in all directions. A short time later, more shots were fired in the direction of the deputies from behind a crowd of people, the release said. In all 15 to 20 shots were fired at deputies.

Deputies called for additional assistance from surrounding law enforcement agencies. Wake County Sheriff's Office, Lee County Sheriff's Office, and State Highway Patrol responded and assisted. No injuries were reported as a result of the shooting, the release said.

Chatham County Sheriff's Office is continuing to investigate the shooting and is asking anyone with information about the incident to call (919) 542-2911.

At the same incident, Roger Smith, 30, of 7550 Moncure Pittsboro Road in Moncure was arrested by Chatham County Deputies.

He was charged with drunk and disruptive behavior, criminal damage to property, and resist delay or obstruct an officer. He was jailed under a $1,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Pittsboro District Court on July 30.
