DURHAM - Two people were hospitalized Monday night after a motorcycle being pursued by a Durham County deputy slammed into the back of a car in northern Durham County.

Deputies say the motorcycle driver, Arthur Michael Tilley, 46, had a strong odor of alcohol. A resident of Roxboro, Tilley has a criminal record that includes multiple drinking and driving offenses.

Tilley crashed into a Saturn driven by Sherry Dail, of Timberlake in Person County. Dail’s four-year-old daughter, Megan, was killed in 1997 by a drunk driver with multiple DWI convictions.

Tilley and Dail were taken to Duke University Hospital, Tilley with multiple injuries. Their conditions were unknown Tuesday evening.

Deputy Alex Champagne spotted Tilley driving at a high rate of speed on U.S 501 northbound near Tom Wilkinson Road, according to a sheriff’s office press release. Champagne caught up to Tilley in about one mile at a red light at U.S. 501 and Snow Hill Road. Champagne turned on his blue lights when the light changed, but Tilley sped away, reaching up to 85 mph.

About two miles farther at U.S. 501 and Bahama Road, Tilley made a U-turn and headed south at about 100 mph. Near Snow Hill Road, Tilley made a second U-turn across the grassy median and headed north again, weaving between lanes, the report said. After reaching 110 mph, he hade another U-turn and headed south.

The motorcycle crashed into Dail’s car near Little River Reservoir. Tilley was thrown from the motorcycle and was found lying in the median.

According to sheriff’s office chase policy, a pursuit is warranted if a driver is suspected of assault, of being impaired or driving recklessly. Tilley’s driving was considered reckless because he was going far in excess of the 45 mph speed limit, Capt. Ricky Buchanan said. Buchanan said department supervisors believe Champagne’s actions were justified.

From 1987 to 2005, court records show, Tilley was found guilty of various DWI and reckless driving charges in Orange, Wayne, Durham and Person counties. His other convictions include possession of stolen goods, shoplifting, speeding, robbery, assault, breaking and entering, drug possession and larceny.

He now faces charges for DWI, fleeing to elude arrest, speeding, careless and reckless driving, failure to stop for blue lights and siren and running a stop light, according to the sheriff’s department.
