SMITHFIELD -- The building that houses Johnston County's program for gifted students might become offices for school system employees.
When that happens, the Academically and Intellectually Gifted Center could find itself spread over two campuses -- South Smithfield Elementary School and Powhatan Elementary School near Clayton.
The idea, discussed by the school board this week, didn't sit well with Deborah Rosenberg of Benson, whose child attends the AIG Center. Two centers would require more teachers and supplies, she said. Instead, she suggested, why not renovate the building in Smithfield?
"I know the facility needs some work," she told school board members. "Whoever moves into that facility ... it has to be updated, so why not leave the children and their families in their safe haven? ... Get on with it."
