A Knightdale man was sentenced to 22 years in prison this week after he pleaded guilty to possession with intent to sell crack cocaine and possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking.

McKinley Shondell Jones, 30, was sentenced in U.S. District Court in New Bern by Judge Louise W. Flanagan.

In October, police searched Jones' residence and found 135 grams of crack, $76,741, two stolen semi-automatic guns, digital scales and packaging materials, according to a news release issued by the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Jones was arrested along with Saundra Evans, who also pleaded guilty to possessing crack cocaine.

A day after Jones and Evans were released from jail, officers stopped Jones at a traffic stop. During the stop, officers seized $13,561 and 14 grams of crack cocaine, the release said. Jones was not arrested at that time, and became a fugitive, the release said.

In November, the U.S. Marshals Violent Fugitive Task Force Unit set up surveillance. As Jones left a motel room in Garner and got into his car, deputies moved in to make an arrest. Jones, who had initially stopped the vehicle, accelerated toward one of the deputies, the release said.

Officers fired at Jones. While an injured Jones was taken to the hospital, officers searched the motel room and found about 1,000 grams of cocaine, a scale and packaging materials.

Jones' previous convictions include possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, larceny, possession of cocaine, hit and run, possession of a firearm by a felon, assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, trafficking cocaine by transportation and escape from state prison, the release said.
