Dr. Louise Markert, the Duke immunologist featured in a three-part News & Observer series in April, will be profiled today on “Good Morning, America” (from 7 to 9 a.m. on ABC) and again tonight on “Nightline” (11:35 p.m. on ABC).

The N&O series documented the case of Jayla Turner, a 1-year-old who was born without a thymus, a gland that plays an essential role in building the immune system. Her parents, Zelene and James, live in Hertford, N.C.

Jayla’s prognosis was grim. At 3 months, doctors said that she would die by age 2.

Her parents were referred to Markert, who performed the transplant with donated thymus tissue in March.

Duke University Medical Center is the only place in the world that does thymus transplants. Markert developed the surgery, and she’s now training doctors from London who will perform transplants in England.
