N.C. unemployment rose to 6 percent in June.

The state jobless rate jumped in June to the highest level in more than four years as the labor market continued to cool.

Unemployment was 6 percent last month, up from 5.9 percent in May, according to statistics released this morning by the N.C. Employment Security Commission. It was the sixth consecutive rate increase and the highest level since December 2003.

North Carolina's joblessness continues to remain above the national average, which was 5.5 percent in June.

"The slowing national economy is taking a toll on North Carolina," said Harry E. Payne, Jr., chairman of the Employment Security Commission. "We still have job orders coming into our offices, but not at the pace we have been experiencing."
