PITTSBORO -- Authorities late Saturday were working to determine the identity of a man who drowned in Jordan Lake on Saturday afternoon.
Chatham County rescue crews, aided by N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission rangers, spent several hours searching for the body of the victim.
Authorities said the unidentified man and a friend were on a boat when they decided to go swimming. A boater on the lake called police and reported someone in the water having trouble and said the person went under.
The victim was found in 15-foot-deep water off the Poplar Point Park boat ramps about 1:30 p.m.
The investigation was suspended Saturday afternoon when thunderstorms moved into the area. Southeastern Orange County was under a flash flood warning Saturday evening as showers continued, according to the National Weather Service.
