North Carolina has an untapped source of energy: the wind blowing off the coast and through the mountains.

"The U.S. Department of Energy is very interested in North Carolina," said Bob Leker, renewables program manager for the State Energy Office. "We have a significant resource by virtue of the miles of coastline and relatively shallow sound."

Leker made a remarks today to the N.C. Coastal Resources Advisory Council, a group that gives input to the state's coastal policy makers.

As efforts mount nationally to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, states are seeking sources of renewable energy such as wind and solar that spew less pollution than coal-burning power plants, which produce large amounts of carbon dioxide, a primary greenhouse gas.

The advisory council does not take action on policy, but the state legislature has asked for a study of permits that would be needed for commercial wind farms.
