GOLDSBORO -- A Goldsboro man has been charged with murder after he told sheriff's deputies he had been in a fight with his girlfriend and asked them to check on her.
Authorities said 45-year-old Herman Phillip Best went to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office on Wednesday to report that he and his girlfriend, 45-year-old Martha Cook Carter, had been arguing.
Best was placed in the Wayne County jail without bond. He had not retained an attorney but was scheduled to appear in court Thursday afternoon.
