HAMLET -- Three people have died in a wreck near Rockingham as they were returning to Surry County from Myrtle Beach, S.C.

State Highway Patrol Trooper M.R. Leach says the sport utility vehicle they were in flipped over on the U.S. 74 bypass Tuesday afternoon.

The driver, 21-year-old Justin Andrew Tate of Mount Airy, 21-year-old Crystal Nicole Newsome of Mount Airy and 22-year-old Brittany Nicole Hiatt of Evans, Ga., died in the wreck. Hiatt was originally from Mount Airy.

Leach told the Winston-Salem Journal that witnesses told troopers the SUV was traveling considerably faster than the 70-mph speed limit on the highway.

Leach said the vehicle ran off the left side of the road and Tate over-corrected and the SUV flipped four or five times, went over a guardrail and down a steep embankment.
