MANTEO -- A beach driving association is offering a reward for information that leads to the conviction of people involved in illegal driving last week on a Hatteras Island beach.
The National Park Service said a vehicle drove on a closed section of beach near Salvo on Thursday and crushed the egg of a least tern.
N.C. Beach Buggy Association president Jim Keene announced Friday a $1,000 payment for information in this or other vandalism cases.
Keene said the reward would be in effect until Nov. 15 or until all sea turtle eggs had hatched.
Sections of the beach on Hatteras Island have been closed to foot and vehicular use during the nesting season for endangered birds and sea turtles. The closure followed an agreement to end a lawsuit against the National Park Service.
