RALEIGH -- Two Raleigh police officers were charged with not wearing their seat belts last week as they headed to the scene of a chase that ended with the shooting of a carjacking suspect.

Lea Marie Younker, 30, and James Edward Clifton, 51, were responding to a chase involving carjacking suspect Renford Butler of Durham on Aug. 5.

The patrol car driven by Younker collided with a 1993 Nissan at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Grantland Drive, then struck a retaining wall and a parked vehicle before coming to rest on a porch.

Butler stole a taxicab and crashed into a white van near the intersection of Lane and Dawson Streets. A policeman later shot Butler; officers said he was brandishing a straight razor at the time.

An investigation is ongoing, but Younker and Clifton were charged on Tuesday with not wearing seat belts, a violation of state law and department policy.
