RALEIGH -- In a sign of the continuing disaffection with former Sen. John Edwards, one of his former strategists wrote a scathing critique of his one-time employer, calling Edwards' TV confession to a romantic affair "breathtakingly cynical."

In a post on his blog, Democrat Gary Pearce said Edwards' confession was "a spectacular failure," raising more questions than it answered.

"The more he talked, the deeper he dug the hole," wrote Pearce who ran Edwards' 1998 U.S. Senate race.

On Friday, Edwards gave an interview to ABC's Bob Woodruff in which he said said he had an affair with videographer Rielle Hunter who had briefly worked for his campaign. His appearance came on the heels of a National Enquirer story.

"Earth to John: The National Enquirer now officially has more credibility than you do," Pearce wrote.

Contacted today, Pearce said many Democrats in Raleigh feel angry, betrayed and embarrassed by Edwards.

"People gave up time and volunteered for him," Pearce said. "They're the angriest."

Since posting his blog on Wednesday, Pearce said he has gotten only positive responses.
