CARY -- Cary Town Manager Bill Coleman is retiring to go to work for software developer SAS.
His last day with Cary will be Oct. 17, the town announced Friday.
After that, Coleman will work for the local-government group of SAS, where he will "use his vast knowledge of governments' inner-workings to help the company devise and implement software solutions for governmental operations," according to a town news release.
Coleman, 57, has been town manager in Cary since 1994. Before coming to Cary as assistant town manager in 1988, he was the Chatham County manager and town manager for Pittsboro and Southern Pines.
Cary Mayor Harold Weinbrecht praised Coleman, saying in the news release that he had helped Cary become "one of the greatest communities in the nation."
Town officials said they would develop plans to fill the vacancy between now and Coleman's departure.
