The state's mental hospital in Goldsboro is getting more security and a going-over by an independent hospital management firm, state officials said today.

Recent incidents of violence and patient neglect at Cherry Hospital have placed the state's problems with its mental health system under a national spotlight and put the hospital's federal funding in jeopardy.

"The serious and ongoing nature of issues at Cherry Hospital has convinced me that an outside evaluation by an independent hospital management group is necessary in order to identify problems and to recommend immediate steps for corrections and improvements," said Dempsey Benton, state Department of Health and Human Services secretary

Cherry fired three employees Wednesday in connection with the beating of a patient last week. The hospital also told one part-time nurse not to return.

In late April, a 50-year-old man died at Cherry after sitting in a chair for 22 hours without food while staff members sat nearby playing cards and watching television.
