FUQUAY-VARINA -- Novant Health officials will host a Sept. 9 community forum in Fuquay-Varina to present their plans for a 47-bed acute care hospital in Holly Springs. Local residents will have an opportunity to ask questions about the proposed $110 million project.

Mark Billings, president of Novant's Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, and other officials from the Winston-Salem hospital chain will be at the 7 p.m. forum at the Fuquay-Varina Community Center at 820 S. Main St.

Novant's bid to build a Holly Springs hospital has run into stiff competition from Wake County's two largest hospitals, WakeMed and Rex Healthcare, which have announced separate expansion plans for elsewhere in the county. All three bids are complicated by the fact that state hospital regulators have said Wake needs only 41 additional hospital beds to meet the medical needs of the growing county.

WakeMed has filed plans for a $34 million, 61-bed women's hospital on its North Raleigh campus. Rex Healthcare, the third contender, submitted a request for the beds to be added on its Raleigh campus. Rex's plans would cost $20.4 million and add 26 of the beds to its Women's Center. The remaining 15 beds would relieve demand in surgical units.

State regulators are expected to make a decision by the end of January. The losers are likely to appeal.
