A 16-year-old boy died today after his car ran into a utility pole in South Raleigh, the state Highway Patrol said.

Wilver Rodriquez of 917 7th Avenue in Garner was pronounced dead at WakeMed in Raleigh, where he was taken with severe injuries after the crash, said Trooper J.E. Holmes.

The accident occurred shortly before 8:25 a.m. on East Garner Road near the intersection of Auburn Church Road.

Rodriquez was traveling west toward Garner in a 1997 Saturn when he lost control of the vehicle, Holmes said. The car ran off the right side of the road and struck the utility pole. The teen, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle.

The Saturn was going in excess of the posted 45 mph speed limit, Holmes said.

The teen was traveling in the direction of his home, which was a little over five miles away, the trooper said.
