Knightdale fire officials were trying to determine this morning what caused stacks of roof insulation to catch fire Thursday night at the construction site of the Rex Healthcare medical center.

Several five-foot stacks of insulation on the roof caught fire about 9 p.m., Knightdale Fire Chief Timothy Guffey said today.

Firefighters were holding a training exercise at the fire station about a mile away at the time of the call; they extinguished the blaze in about 25 minutes, Guffey said.

The fire destroyed the insulation and some siding at the roughed-in structure.

Guffey said he did not think the fire was deliberately set, though the cause was still unknown this morning.

Officials broke ground at the site in April. The 63,000-square-foot building is scheduled to open in May 2009 beside Knightdale Boulevard near Interstate 540.

Rex will lease 32,000 square feet in the building, which is being developed by NexCore Group, a Colorado-based healthcare development company.

The facility will house an urgent care center and will offer services including X-ray, laboratory services, digital mammography and sleep laboratories.

Physicians offices and diagnostic imaging services are also expected to be located there.
