GOLDSTON -- The Chatham County Public Health Department has been awarded $18,700 to add playground equipment for young children at Goldston Municipal Park.
Chatham was one of nine counties awarded money from Eat Smart, Move More North Carolina, a partnership of the N.C. Division of Public Health.
The purpose of the project is to prevent children up to 5 years of age from being overweight. According to Eat Smart, Move More North Carolina, the state had the fifth-highest rate of overweight children in the nation in 2007. Chatham County had slightly more than one in three children ages 2 to 4 who were overweight or at risk for being overweight.
