Beer men looking for a home

Sean Lilly Wilson, prime mover in the "Pop the Cap" campaign to legalize high-alcohol beer in North Carolina, has a name for the brewpub he wants to open in Durham -- "Fullsteam Brewery" -- but he's still looking for a place to build it.

Wilson and associates Lee Chase, Chris Davis and Tommy Lee Edwards have an option on a warehouse in East Durham, but would prefer a location in "part of Durham's emerging nightlife districts."

What they have in mind, they describe as "a tavern full of music, politics and revelry."

They're looking for 6,000 to 8,000 square feet with concrete floors and 14-foot ceilings, for around $4 a square foot. See www.fullsteam.ag.

Condos rising

More than two years since he went public with the idea, Scott Harmon's Mangum 506 condominiums are under construction downtown.

That's right -- condominiums. Construction. In this market.

It's at the former parking lot where Harmon's "Downtown Sexy" sign has stood these past few months. As of last weekend, the pavement was gone and utilities were going in.

Harmon broke ground earlier this month with 10 of 21 residential units pre-sold. The residences run from 627 square feet to 1,220 square feet and prices from $169,900 to $289,900. See www.mangum506.com.

Holiday pops

Owners Stephany Heckman and Kambria Harris advise that their Mad Popper Gourmet popcorn emporium in south Durham has "flavors and packaging options galore" for holiday giving and entertaining. Among the festive flavors: apple cider, candy corn, pumpkin pie, white chocolate cranberry and eggnog.

That's what they say. If your curiosity is piqued, go to Suite 259 in the Homestead Market shopping center on N.C. 54 or see www.themadpopper.com.

La Plaza P.O.

A contract post office with Spanish-speaking staff opens Oct. 18 at La Plaza Latina, 3801 Wake Forest Highway. Grand opening runs from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. with free refreshments all day, according to the U.S. Postal Service.
