RALEIGH -- What started with a Wake County sheriff's deputy spotting someone apparently urinating next to a Jeep turned into a three-county chase Saturday morning, according to the sheriff's office.

The deputy was conducting a security check on Triple Oak Drive at 7:40 a.m. when the deputy saw the man. As the deputy approached, the Jeep Cherokee sped off, according to a release from the sheriff's office.

The pursuit went from Wake to Durham County, back into Wake and then into Johnston County. Items were thrown from the Jeep on Interstate 540, though deputies did not say what those items were. The chase ended when the Jeep wrecked in downtown Clayton at 8:09 a.m.

The driver of the Jeep was taken to Johnston County Memorial Hospital in Smithfield. Charges are pending against him. Two other suspects were taken to the Wake County jail, where they were charged with resisting, delaying or obstructing a law enforcement officer.

Deputies said they could not confirm the identities of the suspects. The two at the jail had no identification, and the one at the hospital had three IDs.
