RALEIGH -- Traffic in the southbound lanes of Capital Boulevard had to be detoured for several hours Sunday after an early-morning single-car wreck toppled an overhead sign into the roadway just north of the Wade Avenue exit, police said.

Paul Daniel Ashworth, 32, of 2511-203 Cedar Forest Way, Raleigh, was charged with DWI and driving with license revoked after the 2:17 a.m. crash. A police report said that Ashworth lost control of his 1994 Acura and drifted over the left curb while trying to regain control.

"The vehicle skidded sideways into an overhead sign structure support, causing the overhead structure to collapse onto the roadway," the report said.

Ashworth registered 0.13 on a blood alcohol test after the crash and told police he drank several beers before driving, the report said. A passenger was taken to WakeMed with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening.
