FORT BRAGG -- An 82nd Airborne Division paratrooper was awarded the Army's third highest medal for his heroism in combat against the Taliban in Afghanistan.
Sgt. 1st Class James Brasher's heroics last December would save the lives of at least four of his soldiers. On Thursday, he was awarded the Silver Star.
The Fayetteville Observer reports that the description of the battle that Brasher's soldiers submitted to the Army in nominating him for the award described him operating coolly in a hailstorm of enemy fire.
Taliban fire hit the New Mexico man, wounding his right arm, but Brasher kept fighting.
Brasher's company commander that day said Thursday that Brasher's example in battle inspired him and other soldiers.
