Fifth Newby is Eagle Scout

Peter Newby, 17, of Raleigh recently attained the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest achievement in Scouting. He is a member of Troop 11, sponsored by Calvary Presbyterian Church. His Eagle project consisted of designing and supervising the construction of a walkway for his church, Christ Baptist Church. Newby, a junior at Grace Christian School, is the son of Justice Paul Newby of the state Supreme Court and his wife, Macon Tucker Newby. In obtaining the Eagle rank, Peter Newby joined his father, an older brother, an uncle and a cousin in achieving the honor.

GROUP AWARDS AZALEAS TO CHURCH

Tree of Life Lutheran Church recently was selected by NC Beautiful to receive a prize of 35 azaleas for use in the group's 2008 beautification projects. The award is part of the NC Beautiful's annual Azalea Celebration, which rewards groups for improving their communities through creative landscape projects.

Tree of Life's members planted the azaleas Saturday at its outdoor garden area at 1155 Executive Circle in Cary. Community members can visit the circle to enjoy a lunch break or relax. The azalea program is sponsored by the Capitol Broadcasting Company and funded in part by the A.J. Fletcher foundation.

SENIOR CHEERLEADERS WIN GOLD

The Durham Senior Games Divas & Dude Cheerleader Squad recently won the gold medal in the cheerleading competition at the 2008 N.C. State Finals held in Raleigh. The Orange County Jammers won the bronze medal.

The Durham Senior Divas cheerleaders were organized in February 2004. They range in age from 59 to 82 and have competed in the Durham and North Carolina Senior Games since 2006.
