A power outage left much of downtown Chapel Hill and the eastern part of Carrboro without electricity this afternoon but Duke Energy restored it about 1:55 p.m.
Company spokesman Andy Thompson said power was rerouted from other lines after a substation on Carmon Avenue malfunctioned. The outage occurred about 12:45 p.m.
It affected about 6,000 customers, Thompson said, including the western quarter of UNC Chapel Hill's campus.
Police were directing traffic at downtown intersections this afternoon.
