SELMA -- Five schoolchildren and a garbage truck driver were taken to the hospital Monday after an accident involving five vehicles, the Highway Patrol said.
The accident about 4:20 p.m. on U.S. 70 near Buffalo Road temporarily stopped traffic, authorities said.
A tractor was mowing along the right shoulder when a school bus slowed behind it, said Trooper J. Partin. A passenger car slowed behind the school bus, which had its lights flashing.
"A garbage truck came and did not slow," Partin said. The garbage truck hit the car, which then struck the bus. The garbage truck then went off to the left and hit another car before running off the road.
Partin estimated the garbage truck was going 55 mph when it hit the car.
Five children from the school bus were taken to the hospital, Partin said. Their injuries were believed to be minor. The garbage truck driver was also taken to the hospital with injuries the trooper described as serious.
No charges have been filed in the ongoing investigation.
