Stephen Posovsky, right, comforts his dog Cassidy as Cassidy is fitted with a new prosthetic leg by orthopedic surgeon Denis Marcellin-Little, left, with assistance from student Sloan Elliott, at N.C State University's Small Animal Hospital in Raleigh.
An X-ray of Cassidy's right hind leg, taken Monday, shows progress on the dog's right leg bone growing smoothly into a prosthetic attachment that will eventually support a permanent prosthetic leg.
Cassidy is the first large animal to undergo the procedure, which could one day lead to better prosthetics for wounded combat veterans and others.
