DANIELS MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS MAKE STRIDES AT MODEL U.N. MATCH

Five delegations of students from Daniels Middle School won or placed during the Fall Middle School Model U.N. Security Council Conference this month at Appalachian State University.

Three Daniels delegations placed first: eighth-graders Abby Thurman and Rachel Sun, representing Indonesia; seventh-graders Madison Sprinkle and Victoria Pediaditakis, representing Libya; and sixth-graders Alex Lewontin, Mishi Lukas and Tanner Morgan, representing China.

Second place went to eighth-graders Collin Walther and Ryan Allis, along with sixth-grader Noah Somaratne, representing China. Third place went to sixth-graders Matthew Parker, Harrison Lee and Julian Barlow, representing Indonesia. A total of 35 Daniels students attended the event, with teacher Carla Hassell serving as adviser.

GREENSBORO GIRL WINS GIRL SCOUT GOLD AWARD

Bayly Hassell, 16, of Greensboro has earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting.

A member of Senior Girl Scout Troop No. 150, Hassell has been a Girl Scout for 11 years. She is the daughter of N.C. District Court Judge A. Robinson Hassell and UNC-Greensboro business law senior lecturer Eloise McCain Hassell. She is a junior at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire.

To earn the Gold Award, Hassell designed and carried out a plan of activities, including service to the community, career exploration, specialized interest projects and a Girl Scout Challenge.
