RALEIGH -- A retired police dog who landed in the backyard of the state Highway Patrol trooper disciplined for kicking him has been returned to the trooper entrusted with his care.
Ricoh, an 8-year-old Belgian Malinois, was retired after the circulation of a video clip depicting Sgt. Charles L. Jones kicking him five times during a training session in Raleigh.
Jones was stripped of his job after news reports of the video prompted Gov. Mike Easley's office to recommend his firing.
The patrol has appealed a decision by the State Personnel Commission two weeks ago to return Jones to duty and may launch an investigation to determine how Ricoh wound up back with Jones.
Trooper Robert Reaves, a former canine handler who signed a contract with the patrol to give Ricoh a home for life and never use him for police work or money-making ventures, reclaimed the dog from Jones Thursday night, the patrol said.
