DURHAM -- A Durham police officer was dragged about 100 yards during a traffic stop Thursday.

Officer T.A. Stanhope was treated for minor injuries and released from Duke Hospital.

Stanhope was among a group of officers who stopped a Honda for a traffic violation about 3:30 p.m. on Ninth Street near West Main Street. While the officers were questioning the driver, a passenger jumped into the driver's seat and drove away, dragging Stanhope with him, police said.

The vehicle landed partly on its side after going into some bushes. The driver and three others were caught after a foot chase. Burglary tools were found in the vehicle, police said.

Antonio Milligan, 22, of Owen Street; Kirk Chandler, 18, of Hillsborough; Richard Jebb, 21, of Clarendon Street; and Brandon Handy, 17, of Mebane, are all charged with possession of burglary tools. Milligan is also charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a government official; one count of felony hit-and-run; and one count of resisting, delaying and obstructing an officer.
