RALEIGH -- The city will start its curbside collection of loose leaves Wednesday.
City workers will begin their collections between Wade and Glenwood avenues and then move clockwise, making a complete pass through the city before Christmas Day, weather permitting. A second pass through the city will start Jan. 5.
Leaf collectors also will focus on streets with high-volume parking areas downtown and around colleges on Dec. 29-Jan. 2.
The city is asking residents to:
* Rake leaves to the curb, not in the street.
* Keep loose leaves off sidewalks and water meter boxes and away from fire hydrants.
* Avoid parking vehicles in front of leaf piles.
* If possible, pile leaves within eight feet of the curb or edge of pavement if no curb is present.
* Make sure no other yard waste, such as limbs and sticks, are mixed with leaves.
To find out when collections will take place in your neighborhood, go to www.raleigh-nc.org or call 996-3720. Also, the city will place advertisements in The News & Observer with maps showing collection areas and will provide updates on Cable Channel 22.
The city will pick up leaves in clear plastic bags, paper bags or permanent containers on regular yard waste collection days.
