DURHAM -- A man died from burns after apparently trying to steal copper at a power substation, police said Thursday.

Stanley Richardson, 49, of Durham, died this week at UNC Hospitals. He was found by police officers last week at the Duke Energy substation near Ashe Street and Hoover Road.

Richardson had severe burns over much of his body, police said. He apparently was trying to steal copper from the substation, according to a news release.

Thefts of copper and other metals are up recently, as demand has increased and prices have soared. Construction sites, air conditioners and cemeteries have been targeted in the Triangle.
